I have been experimenting a little with complementing rum with nuts and dried fruits and other sorts of culinary delicacies. I will update this particular page whenever I come across a good pairing.
Brazil Nuts - Raw, not salted! The salt will take away from any flavor in the rum; also, too much sodium is unhealthy for you! Brazil nuts are known to provide significant amounts of selenium, a powerful antioxidant; however, too much selenium is bad for you and, apparently, may cause ones hair and nails to fall out. The flavor of a Brazil nut, to me, adds a little extra to the oak notes within my rum and also cleanses the palette in preparation for the promising flavor of the dark premium rum before you!
Dark Chocolate - My favorite pairing has been with Diplomatico Reserva. A good quality dark chocolate also possesses antioxidants, proven to fight cancer and heart disease. A small chocolate cafe in Fort Langley, Euphoria Chocolates; http://www.euphoriastore.ca/. They make these beautiful little pieces of crystallized covered in dark chocolate. These fine chocolates seem to compliment most premium rums.
Figs - Dried fruits rich in natural sugars, minerals and fiber. Potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and manganese. An all around awesome snack....and they taste delicious!
