Brugal Ron Añejo – Dominican Republic:
The First Impression: At about $28CA a bottle, this rum is fairly inexpensive. The bottle is not very impressive; tall, clear glass bottle with a plastic cap and an adhesive label. The rum has a warm, dark amber appearance that catches the light nicely, suggesting that is has been aging for a short period of time; being a blend of 2 and 5 year old rums. The initial smell proves that the alcohol factor is not entirely masked as it has an almost instant burn to the nose.
The Taste: At first there is an almost overwhelming alcohol burn, catching the nose and throat by surprise. Quickly followed by the flavours buried deep within! The first is a slight vanilla undertone, complimented by a very slightly salty taste. The strangest flavour is the combination of aged, charred wood and leather; reminiscent of aged furniture and leather-bound books, like that of an old antique mall. Yes! Very strange!
Alas, The Finish: The lingering flavour of “old antique mall’ is complimented by long warming trail down the throat. Everything said, this rum has not been added to my list of “favourite rums”; however, it is still quite enjoyable neat, on the rocks, or maybe even mixed with coke. I must honestly say, however, that this rum has marked the bottom of my list.
Mmmm....Can't, in good conscience, recommend this rum. I give this a rating of 1! Sorry Brugal...it wasn`t that good!
