Pronounced [pahy-ruht] or pirate; this rum was the very first, of many, that I endeavor to taste. Christmas morning of 2010, amidst the exchanging of gifts at my mother-in-law's house, I began to talk about this particular bottle of rum that I had seen in a liquor store in Langley. The bottle was short, round and stout; hand-blown glass with a truly awesome cork, and adorned with a yellow ribbon and a medallion of Hotti, the patron saint of bartenders and fortune-tellers. I believe I babbled on about this rum for several minutes, unaware of the expression on the faces of my family. At the moment my babble ended my brother-in-law, with a grin on his face, hands me a little red basket topped with paper! As I pulled the paper off I recognized that "truly awesome cork"! ALL RIGHT!! I pulled the bottle out and ran and grabbed three glasses, one for mom, one for Jason, and the third for me; my wife had to sit it out on account of being pregnant, shame she had to miss out on such a momentous occasion! As I removed the cork, the scent of citrus, brown sugar, and spices permeated the room! I tasted the citrus, and brown sugar, molasses, and an array of spices. The sensation was an initial bite, a flood of flavor, and a warm lingering trail down the throat. The most flavorful drink I have had, thus far! I wouldn't dream of mixing this rum, except for a literal splash of coke or filtered water.
