Cruzan Single Barrel – St. Croix; Virgin Islands:
The First Impression: This particular bottle of rum comes in a nice, tall, slender bottle; clear, so that one may admire the gorgeous amber hue of the rum to be enjoyed! The base of the bottle-neck has the Cruzan seal embossed directly into the glass. The bottle is topped with a wood-top cork and also has a small paper band around the bottle-neck, displaying the barrel number, bottle number, and certification signature. This really has the appearance of a quality rum; and for CAN$40 a bottle, it’s hard to say no!
In The Glass: A dark amber hue; enticing and warm, just asking to be sipped! Decanting shows long, thin legs, not too viscous.
The Smell: Fairly heavy on the oak; almost undetectable alcohol scent, very easy on the nose. A hint of maple and toffee, butterscotch and citrus; light lacings of cinnamon and nutmeg and a little bit of vanilla.
The Taste: A terrific bite on the tongue, but is nice and smooth in the mouth. Lovely taste of aged, charred oak, and toffee with a light lacing of vanilla; not terribly complex, but a nice tasting rum.
Alas, The Finish: Long and sweet; pairs perfectly with chocolate, dark or milk! Also pairs well with figs and Euphoria Chocolate’s chocolate covered ginger.
I recommend this rum! Rating of 7! It`s good....but not great, sorry!
